Southeast area      About the courses already opened

The southeast area of the Hitachinokuni Long Trail was opened to traffic in March 2023 for the full opening of the trail.
The course is full of historical castle ruins, nostalgic country roads, sacred power spots, eye-catching rock formations and spectacular views from the mountain tops.
Please plan your walk well in advance and allow plenty of time for the distance and schedule. Please check the map and enjoy the trek to the extent that you can, whether by walking in small sections or by piste walking along the course.

Course location

The locations of the southeast SE-01 to SE-45 section courses are located in Takahagi, Hitachiota and Hitachi cities.
It can be accessed by bus or other means from the nearest stations, Takahagi Station and Hitachiota Station.

How to reach the southeast area

The southeast area is accessible by public transport by bus from the JR Suigun Line and JR Joban Line.

Southeast area     Course features

The already-opened trails in the southeast area are located in the Abukuma mountain range and include the scenic Hananuki Gorge, Tatsuware and Oiwa Shrine in the course.

Climb up Mt Tsuchidake from SE-01 Hananuki Gorge, the starting point of the course in the southeast area, to enjoy the view while enjoying the hiking atmosphere. The area around Hananuki Gorge, famous for its autumn foliage, is also beautiful in the shining green season and in winter when the outlook is good.

Walk along the nostalgic village roads of Takahagi to the next mountain, Tatsuware. Experience a mystical trek in a mountain with many anecdotes and legends.

Head south with a waterfall and enjoy the Nakasato village walking zone in a relaxed way. Continue further south down the Fruit Road, surrounded by the relaxing view of the village and the sound of the waterside.

With Tamadare Waterfall as a landmark, now head to Oiwa Shrine and Mt Oiwa. After enjoying a spiritual mountain walk, continue directly to the next mountain, Mt Takasu.

From Mt Takasuzu, the trail often descends towards Hitachi on the east side, but now a new trail has been opened to Harutomo on the west side. Since we are here, let’s walk along the new path to Harutomo.

From Harutomo, pass through the Kuroiso Bakke, where you can encounter a spectacular view over the village, and head south in the direction of Mt Kunimi.

As of 2023/3, these SE-01 to SE-45 sections are open in the southeast area, so check the course against the map.

Places of interest to be found on the course

1. Encounter strange rocks and rich nature
   The Hananuki and Mt.Tatsuware areas, where you can encounter large and strange rocks in the valley, and the Mt.Takasuzu, where you can encounter rich vegetation. As the area has a long distance to travel from east to west and north to south, you can enjoy the changes in geological formations and vegetation.
2. Encounter famous scenic spots
   Hananuki Gorge, with its famous suspension bridge, which is often talked about on social networking sites, and large and small waterfalls make hiking in the southeast area even more enjoyable.
3. Encounter the view
   Although a low mountain, Tsuchidake can be seen all the way to the sea. From Kuroiso Bakke, trekkers are also greeted by a splendid view of the village.
4. Encounter history
   The old history and legends of Mt.Tatsuware and the historical background to the Oiwa Shrine. Furthermore, the history of the Satake and Tokugawa clans can be experienced in the vicinity of Mt.Kunimi.
