GEO&NATURE-SE06:
Flood Control and Geology
~The latest technology from Nagata father and son
The Tatsunokuchi Weir, located just upstream from the Tatsunokuchi Water Park, was constructed during the Edo period as part of a large-scale flood control project by the Mito Clan.
Since then, it has been a large-scale irrigation facility with a long history of taking water from the Kuji River and delivering it to the surrounding farmlands.
The Mito Clan assigned Moemon Nagata and Kanemon Nagata, father and son, both from Kai Province and highly skilled in civil engineering, to work on the flood control project to create this weir.
The area around Tatsunokuchi, where the river curved sharply, was a relatively new geological formation where river sand had accumulated, making it easy for water to seep into the soil and making irrigation work extremely difficult.
The Nagata father and son succeeded in constructing a weir by mixing water with deposited ashes and using what is now called the modern concrete technique.
The weir, built 300 years ago with modern technology, continues to support flood control in the surrounding area today.
